2012 Ukraine Tour Itinerary
On Monday August 13, we leave our home destinations and Toronto for an exciting 23 day adventure in Ukraine.
We'll spend three nights in Kyiv and visit the Pecherska Lavra Monastery with its Baroque churches, and tour around the territory of the former Pechersk fortress and visit the Museum of History of WW2.
Our Grand city-tour of the city of Kyiv will include a visit to open area museum “Mamaeva Sloboda”, the area where people used to live and work in the 18-19 century helping you to imagine the way of life of Ukrainians in olden days.
Enroute to Odessa, we’ll lunch in Uman, a small old town dating back to 1609 and famous for its LANDSCAPE PARK "SOFYIVKA". With our arrival to Odesa. Smile! They say, and in a way it is true. Odessa is known as the capital of humor.
Plunge into the history of Odessa and admire the variety of architectural styles and monuments of the city often reckoned as the “Pearl by the Black Sea” we will see the largest Ukrainian port and a Monument of Duc de Richelieu and visit to the Art and Navy Museums. Odessa today is the one of the most beautiful cities in Ukraine.
Enroute to Chernivtci, we’ll visit the city-fortress Khotyn and Kaminets-Podylski with its renowned medieval fortresses and numerous Orthodox, Armenian and Catholic churches, as well as Turkish Minarets. Kaminets-Podylski was founded more than 9 centuries ago. Many historical and architectural monuments have been preserved in this town-museum. The beautiful panorama of the fortress will bring you back to the medieval times. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. , this 12th-century city has managed to preserve many historical and architectural monuments. Lunch at the city restaurant. After Lunch we’ll travel to Chernivtci.
Arriving in Chernivtsi, the regional capital of Bukovina region, we’’ have a city tour. The city was founded in the 12th century, as a fortress to protect the Halych-Volyn principality from the nomadic tribes. It has a very rich history closely connected with the history of neighboring Romania and Moldavia.
City tour of Ternopil.
Visit Pochaiv Monastery in the city of Pochaiv, about 75 kms north of Ternopil. The Pochaiv Lavra is the largest Orthodox sacred place in Volyn and the second largest in Ukraine after the Kyiv Perchersk Lavra.
Travel from Ternopil to the Carpathian Mountains . The Ukrainian Carpathians make only a central part of the vast mountain chain which stretches for 1500 km , and visit the town of Yaremchie (population of 10,000), (Ukraine’s comparable of Canada’s Jasper area) that is the Hutsyl area of Ukraine. We’ll visit the Huk waterfall and the craft market , where you may wish to purchase some of your handcrafted souvenirs as well as embroidered towels, etc.
We’ll drive to Bukovel, the beautiful and popular ski resort of Western Ukraine, here we can taste the mineral water “Bukovelska” and enjoy the amazing panoramic mountain views.
From Yaremche we'll be enroute to Kolomyia . We will have a school concert. Visit the Pysanka Museum Lunch at the city restaurant. We depart to Village church to witness wedding vows and proceed to huge village outdoor tent to take part and celebrate a Hutsul style Ukrainian wedding.
We’ll drive though Halych (which is one of the oldest Ukrainian towns) and stop in Rohatyn, (which is the birthplace of Roksolana) to see the monument of Roksolana and visit the church.
Arrive in Lviv, "The city of Lions" the heart and soul of the Western Ukraine. Prince Danylo Halytsky built this city in 1256 and named it after his son Lev ("lion"). and is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We’ll have a walking City-tour of Old part of Lviv with all its high-lights: Rynok Square , Dominican Cathedral, Black House, Italian Courtyard, King’s Jan Kazimir III residence. Latin Cathedral, Boims Chappel, the Assumption Church and Ensemble of Bernardine Monastary. Armenian Cathedral one of the oldest in Lviv. Visit to the Museum of the Victims which were controlled by the former KGB. This was a fearful and sorrowful page of Soviet Ukrainian History.
We’ll visit Vysokyi Zamok (High Castle hill) with an unforgettable panorama of the entire city, we’ll visit Lychakiv Cemetary one of most beautiful and old necropolis and the one of the largest Cemetaries known in Europe, the University of Ivan-Franko, St. George’s Cathedral.
